Property Taxes

Richland County real estate tax bills are mailed in December by the municipalities. Each parcel of property will have its own tax bill, so you may receive multiple tax bills. The Richland County Treasurer’s office is unable to estimate the amount of your upcoming tax bill until taxes are printed.  If you have inquiries of when your tax bills will be sent, please contact the municipality that the property is located in.

Taxpayers are responsible to contact the Richland County Treasurer’s office for any change of mailing address for their real estate taxes. Taxpayer needs to submit a Change of Address form on our website. Wisconsin Statutes 74.09(6): Failure to receive a property tax bill does not affect the validity of the general property taxes, special taxes, special charges and special assessments levied or the collection of delinquent general property taxes, special taxes, special charges and special assessments.

Richland County has a free portal for the public to search, view and pay property tax information online. In the portal, you can find mailing/property addresses, parcel numbers, tax bills, fair market value, receipts, assessments, values, balance inquiry, and lottery credit claims. We encourage Richland County residents to use the public portal.

Richland County has two installment period deadlines for the payment of real estate property taxes. Each installment period has a different collecting official. The first installment period is collected by the local municipal treasurer and should be made payable to the municipality where the property is located.  The 2nd installment period is collected by the county treasurer and should be made payable to the Richland County Treasurer. Your tax bill may not have the option to pay in two installments. This information is located on the tax bill. It is the responsibility of the taxpayer to give the collecting official information on how to process the payment(s).

Property Transfers

At Richland County, we work diligently to provide the most up to date records within our real estate property system.  We would like to inform you that the real estate property records reflect all transferred property that has been recorded as of October 15, 2025 with the exception of certain split parcels. As we enter the upcoming tax season, property conveyances that have been recorded after October 15, 2025 will not be reflected in the real estate property system nor on the upcoming tax bills. If you purchased or sold property after October 15, 2025, the property will still be in the name of whomever owned the property as of October 15, 2025. If you have questions about the proration of real estate taxes and which party should pay the real estate taxes, please contact the title company or attorney who assisted with your transaction for further information.

Parcel Splits

The following townships in Richland County do not split parcels until the next year (2026). This means your parcel will not be split for 2025, but will be split in 2026.   The split parcels will not be reflected on the 2025 tax bills nor in our real estate property system until the following year (2026).

Delinquent Property Taxes

Missing a due date for payment of property taxes results in the unpaid tax becoming delinquent. Once the property taxes become delinquent the following occurs:

  1. The entire balance of the tax bill amount comes due immediately.
  2. A monthly interest 1.0% of the unpaid principal is added back to February 1.
    • This charge accrues on the 1st of each month until the bill (principal and interest) is paid in-full.
    • If a property owner is late with the final installment, the monthly interest still goes back February 1, which means an August interest of 7 months (7 x 1.0% = 7%).
  3. Payments are receipted with the date that the payment is received by the Richland County Treasurer’s office.
